Winging It

My Favourite Eyeliner and Tips & Tricks

I have been wearing winged eyeliner since I was about 15 and one of the questions I get asked most regularly is 'How do you get your eyeliner like that?' Well let me tell you.

I have tried every kind of eyeliner out there: pencil, gel, felt tip, kohl, kajal but when it comes to doing winged liner a traditional liquid liner with a brush tip applicator is my favourite. For years my go to liner was the Rimmel London Glam'Eyes Professional Liquid Liner but recently the formula seems to have changed and it is not as good. Luckily I have now found a new holy grail liner in the form of the Nyx Matte Liquid Liner.

This eyeliner is amazing and in my opinion, better than many of the high end liners out there. The applicator has a fine, flexible brush tip which allows for precise and detailed application and the handle is a good size which makes it easy to hold and use.

The formula is a thin liquid and a little goes a long way. It is very pigmented meaning that it dries opaque in one application so you don't have to go over the same area more that once to build up the colour. If you did want to go over an area or touch up throughout the day this liner layers very well over itself and does not bunch up or crack. One of my favourite things about this liner is that it dries completely matte. Many liners, especially those that claim to be long wearing dry quite shiny which is not a look I am keen on.

Another great thing about this liner is that it is incredibly long wearing. I will do my makeup at 7am, do a full day at work, go to the gym and my wings will still be intact when I get home. I wouldn't go so far to say that it is waterproof but it is certainly water resistant so it does not run if you get caught in the rain but it is still easily removed with cleanser or makeup wipes.

To make this eyeliner even better, is is affordable at £6.99 and easy to get hold of at Boots or online. If you are looking to buy a new liquid eyeliner I highly recommend this, you won't be disappointed!

Tips For the Perfect Winged Liner

1. Practice
This sounds incredibly cliche but practice makes perfect when it comes to eyeliner. I used to practice putting it on and taking it off until I got more comfortable with it. That's the best thing about makeup, it's temporary and you can always start over if you don't like it.

2. Sisters Not Twins
Another cliche but it's also true, your eyes aren't identical so you wings won't be either. Although you want your liner to be as even as possible don't put pressure on yourself to make them perfect. As long as they aren't wildly different in size or angle then no one will notice that they aren't identical. Trust me, once you stop striving for perfection it will make applying eyeliner so my easier and you will actually get better at it.

3. Use What Is Best For You
Although the Nyx Matte Liquid Liner is my favourite, a lot of people favour a felt tip pen style liner for doing winged eyeliner. This style of liner is less messy as the fluid is kept inside the casing of the liner and the familiar pen shape give you a lot of control. Use whatever you feel most comfortable with as it will make it easier to achieve the look you want.
